Repugnant is a rather strong word, and while I think she's certainly doing a political two step to explain herself, repugnant is too strong of a word, imo. It's not like she gave this speech while wearing a bikini. I find Sanford a much more repugnant figure than Palin. That speech is her in a nutshell, it was basically a campaign speech. I disagree with her and think (and hope) the GOP can find a better candidate, but I don't find her a disgusting person or the speech repugnant b/c of her opinions. Tom, today it is too strong a word. I am a bit of a conspiracy threorist when it comes to things like this and I do think there is something big lurking out there. With the success she has had, and the national support she has with right wing media, she is in a position to push through some of the best policy Alaska has ever seen. That is, unless she continues to have ethics issues or worse. If we find out that she stepped down to take a lobbyist job paying her 10 times her current salary, then she is just another politician cashing in - I don't begrudge her for that. But if we find out she's getting out of town one step ahead of the law, and she spent her resignation speech blasting the media for putting a big spotlight on her, then it most certainyl would be a repugnant speech. We'll likely know in a few weeks.

The two structures allegedly share 'same wood, same glass, same building materials, same everything'. Tom, comparing this to the Obama-born-in-Kenya story is ridiculous. I'd say that if you stand by that comment, there's a good chance you're going to end up with egg on your face. People don't abruptly quit their jobs without notice. Her brother and both US senators from Alaska apparently learned of the decision by television. One of senators said he had a day full of meetings with her last week, and at no point did she allude to quitting. Also, it's a well-known rule in journalism that most people use Friday afternoons/evenings (especially on a long weekend) to reveal their embarrassing stories, as a way of damage control.

If there is anything to this (kickbacks seem to rule politics in Alaska) I sure hope they have their ducks in a row. The other thing is that Fox is spinning hard, hailing this move as a chance for their party to once again have a leader to provide focus. If they are putting all of their eggs in the Palin basket, it (1) shows how media creates political starts to begin with, and (2) means we are going to have a littany of new excuses as to how actions of political leaders in no way detract from the words they say. Do what I say, not what I do.

I view both as wishful thinking by opposition mindsets. Judging by her words (may not be the best thing to do) it sounds like a financial move to work for as a lobbyist. For someone who holds disparate political leanings, I would have thought you would root for her success. Imo, she is by far the candidate that would be most easily defeated. In the end though, how would her resigning keep an investigation from happening? I am sure just leaving office doesn't prevent her from some sort of disciplinary action/litigation.

On the other hand, throughout the Letterman scandal a few weeks back, she was in Texas, when she claims to have made the decision. Perhaps she was meeting some oil execs. So the energy lobbyist possibility definitely holds water. It will be interesting to see what happens.

This would easily be true if it were the same builder, so that means nothing. It's easily provable with financial records if she paid FMV for it or not. If she did, it's just a smear job. If she didn't, she will be guilty of tax evasion- probably an amount high enough that would warrant a prison sentence.

I have no idea why the Palin supporters justify criticism with the "they are afraid" approach. There is absolutely no basis. There are a number of hardcore Palin supporters that would love to see her run for President because pundits continue to reinforce who she is. Palin herself doesn't, but the legend of Palin is a pretty good story. Those opposed to Palin see Palin for who she is - a character that provided Tina Fey with her finest 5 minutes on televeision, in a segment where she got some of the best laughs she ever got, by doing Palin's Couric interview verbatim. No need for any rewrites. If Palin runs, there are going to be a segment of Americans - aroud 20% - who rabidly support her. And it will be a guaranteed victory for the Democratic candidate - carried into Washington by overwhelming support from Democrats and Moderates. There is no fear of Palin herself, and on the flip side there is no fear of what she would do in the White House. She would never make it through a national campaign. She can't even make it through her current tenure, because that's what quitters would do. Only dead fish go with the flow. She is terrific fodder for comedians. She is a pipe dream for national office.

Ideology gets you into the convention hall - it doesn't get you to the stage, let alone the White House. Bill Kristol, President of the "Palin is so terrific she can't dumb it down enough for America to understand how great she really is" fan club and Chief Apologist debated with fellow Weekly Standard colleague Stephen Hayes this morning. Hayes said that her biggest problem is that she has no issue she stands for (which fully supports the "legend of Palin" approach) and she has missed a tremendous opportunity over the last 8 months - squandering the spotlight she was given by the national media by not promoting the one thing she may know better than anyone else -- Energy Policy. Prime opportunity and no effort. Kristol, of course, countered with the Obama argument ("Obama isn't any better"). What the Palin supporters simply do not understand is that you cannot win over Americans by touting excellence when it doesn't matter, then campaigning solely on the "he's as bad as she is" card when the chips are down. Beginning with the "drill baby drill" movement of last year, she has now been in the national spotlight for a year with nearly unprecedented media support - radio, TV, news mags, internet. The best defense her supporters have is that her detractors are afraid.

Even if Palin somehow won the nomination does anyone think she would fair any better against Obama then McCain did? Obama would have to have a terrible 4 years that rivaled the Carter administration or the 2nd administration of W. I am sure some people will predict the so called apocalypse after his 4 years(maybe, maybe not) but he soundly trounced McCain and if he ran against Palin after just a decent first 4 years it would be like Reagan over Mondale or George Bush over Dukakis. The best things Sarah could have done was stay in office, do a great job of being governor and still have a full year to ready her campaign. Does she think the scrutiny she would face being the president would be less then being the governor of the least populated and the bigget lawless state in the union?

Economically, Obama has surpassed (meaning worse than) Carter in just 6 months (except for inflation, which is coming shortly, the economic numbers are worse than Carter's at this point). Foreign policy is as weak as Carter's if not weaker. He's going to have to do a 180 on both to achieve a "decent" four years and that won't happen - his ideology won't be drastically changing. There wasn't much difference between McCain and Obama. McCain was a left moderate and Obama campaigned, and lied enough to position himself to the right of McCain. A true conservative wins in 2008, too bad one wasn't running. A true conservative wins in 2012 no matter what Obama does in the next 1296 days. If it is Palin, its Palin. If its someone else, so be it. Both parties right now are way off base with the majority of the Country. Way too far left. And it will cost both parties.
