Four-star fullback prospect Carlos Hyde was set to enroll in summer courses at Ohio State, but instead he finds himself still in Florida facing an uncertain future. BuckeyeSports.com has more.

Carlos Hyde has not enrolled in classes at Ohio State and remains in Florida while taking classes in an attempt to raise his ACT score, he has confirmed to BuckeyeSports.com.

The 6-1, 230-pound running back from Naples, Fla., was set to enroll with the rest of Ohio State's class of 2009 during the month of June when he learned that his test score was not high enough to pass admissions at OSU.

"It's real hard, missing out on stuff with the team," Hyde said.

According to Hyde, he needs to achieve a 17 on the ACT in order to become academically eligible. He is taking classes that meet three days a week in order to help try and raise his score.

The next ACT test date in Florida is scheduled for Sept. 12 - the same day the Buckeyes will host USC for a night game at Ohio Stadium.

Asked how long it might be until he arrives at OSU, Hyde said, "I have no clue."

A four-star fullback prospect, Hyde was targeted by the OSU coaching staff as a running back in the same vein as former bruiser Chris "Beanie" Wells. As a senior, he rushed for 1,653 yards and 16 touchdowns and was named the Ft. Myers News-Press Southwest Florida player of the year in the process. He was in attendance for OSU's spring game.

Hyde said he speaks with the OSU coaching staff on a daily basis.

"They tell me to stay focused, work out and keep at it," he said.

That is so strange. The rumblings have been out there for weeks, yet in Duane Long's most recent column, he said Hyde would be the starter by scUM. I thought Boom progressed nicely last year in spite of the monster concussion, and he looked even better in the spring game (burst and vision). Someone pointed out in the comments that Hyde was the only one who hadn't shown up yet. Maybe he'll be like Hines and come in late but still get on the field. I'd bet Calipari could get him a 17.

I was really excited about him and Berry coming in and pushing the current RB's and at least giving some kind of spark or change of pace in the USC game. I'm not saying I don't have faith in our RB's (or maybe I am) but the more the merrier.

As Duane says, I think Berry needs a year in the weight room gaining size and strength, but i did want to see Hyde in the pistol with Boom. I'm really high on Boom and I think he will have a very good year. We'll talk all year long about how you can't replace Beanie, but I fully expect his production numbers to be right there.

I've always said Boom will be a better fit with Pryor than Beanie. No one has grasped this concept (our I'm just a moron). Not saying Boom is a better back by any means, just different style. The Pryor/Beanie offense was a constant struggle of identity. The staff seemed to have a difficult time running an offense that suited Beanie's strengths while still being able to showcase Pryor's playmaking ability. I think this year the offense will be able to surround all around Pryor and what he does best and I think Boom is a perfect piece.

I don't get the attraction of the incoming freshman rb's in terms of taking time from Herron. I think he's solidly our featured back and even he had to redshirt. I'll believe Saine's ability to see significant carries when I see it. He didn't seem particularly adroit at finding running lanes on kickoffs, so I see that being relateable to his ability to find holes in a zone blocking scheme. Vision seems paramount in that sort of blocking pattern, and Herron has shown promise in that area. People just get too concerned about 40 times/high school track times and playing weight.

I think I've read that a few places. I think it's like Bucks bball with Oden. When he was in there, he was an offensive force but it negated the running game and at times brought the other four players to a grinding halt. When he got in foul trouble, the Bucks pushed the ball and worked about the three point line. Oden was great, and the other players had great skills, but they were not always complementary. I always felt the same about Beanie in the offense with Pryor. They were either a wide open offense, which hurt Beanie because the predictability let teams crash the LOS, or they were a pound-it-up-the-middle offense, at the expense of the rest of the skill players. A lot of that was Pryor and where he was as a QB last year, but the split identity hurt them a little bit.

I personally didn't gravitate towards the incoming RB thing either. I was just looking forward to depth and IF they did end up being really good or showed in practice they were capable, now it looks like both of them have shot themselves in the foot. Even though I think Berry's discipline will be off field and not game suspensions. He might seem like he needs to put on lb's (all freshman do), but he looked like a wrecking ball that wouldn't go down in the UA game, and he was still hurt. I too think Saine will impress everyone this year, I think his injury really set him back last year. The guy can straight fly and I don't think we've gotten a chance to really see it yet. I was asking around why he wasn't running in the outdoor 100m for OSU, the answer I got is he doesn't want anything to take away from his development in football.

I agree. It was like everyone holding out for Shaq Rowell to qualify. I had a kid in my freshman orientation class at OSU who was on a wrestling scholarship get a SIX on his ACT. He was happy to let everyone know he got a free ride and scored a whopping 6 on his entry exam. Our folders had our test scores on it and I looked to verify the score. Oh how the times have changed.

As much as I couldn't stand the handcuffs that Holbrook put on the recruiting, I'm not at all thrilled that we are missing on each of our academic flyers - Shaq, Jermil, and now Hyde.

Duane has also hinted that JT Moore might have a come to Jesus discussion with JT this fall over grades. Apparently he is struggling to the point where they could even part ways - a terrible situation with a kid that talented, but a lot of them throw it away.

I didn't even know it was possible to get a 6 on your ACT, my guess is the kid didn't give to shits about the test and didn't even try. But I can see how 17 would be a difficult score to get for some kids. For all we know these kids have a learning dissability where timed tests shouldn't be relevant. I knew some people who didn't have a time limit when taking entrance exams because they were ADHD, dyslectic, etc. I don't know how it is these days, I took it over a decade ago.

That's the first I'd heard about JT Moore and grades. I know he met with Heacock, but the article said it was just over his placement in the defense. He was at camp just visiting with his sister who verbaled to Foster. I was just under the impression he was just chatting. I heard JT Moore gives it 110% all the time on the field, but pure talent isn't like it is with other guys on the radar. Maybe that's just speculation from people because he's only a "3 star".

Well, that is a shame. I hope he gets the score that he needs. I hate that some kids do not get a chance at higher education because they under perform on the ACT if they have all the other qualifications in order.

I really struggled on the ACT because I would get really nervous.

Are you trying to say that just because a kid is eating right for a fullback and he can hit the right hole on the line we should forget about what college is really for? If so, I agree.

I saw that. The "Hyde will be your starter" makes me wonder if Duane's sources are as solid as they used to be. He runs a free site, so at this time he really has no reason to make things up and he's as straight a shooter as they come. Right around the time he mentioned the grades, another site came out with an ultra-positive article on Moore with, like you say, notes on a conversation about where he will line up. If Duane missed badly on this one, I'll still love the guy but it will be hard to take anything to heart until I hear it from another source.

I need to read his site more often, he seems to know a lot more than anyone else. IIRC, he was the first one to blog about the staff changes/additions long before any site had it or they were actually announced. He also breaks down players very well.

NAPLES - Former Naples High football standout Carlos Hyde will most likely miss the 2009 college football season after failing to qualify academically at Ohio State University.

The 6-foot-1 230-pound fullback has failed to meet the required score of 17 on the ACT test, and can't take the test again until Sept. 12, the same day the Buckeyes are scheduled to host USC in the second game of the season.

"I think I'm going to miss the season and just focus on passing the ACT," Hyde said Thursday night. "I'm going to try to grey-shirt and enroll in January, that looks like what's going to happen."

In the meantime Hyde is taking an ACT prep course three times a week and will most likely enroll in a prep school for the fall semester.

"I think I'm going to go to prep school in Virginia and just continue to get ready for the test," said Hyde, who has scored as high as 15 on the test in prior attempts.

The Ohio State coaching staff has recommended two prep schools to Hyde, Fork Union Military Academy and Hargrave Military Academy, both of which are located in Virginia.

Hyde was present at Ohio State's spring game and had previously intended on enrolling for summer classes, but the ACT situation delayed his enrollment.

He has spent the entire summer in Naples, missing out on valuable offseason workouts in Columbus.

Now with all other avenues exhausted, Hyde said he has to focus on the task rather than football.

"That's what I'm going to do, just put all my energy into studying and passing the test," Hyde said.

Hyde said that Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has been nothing but supportive about the situation.

"He just told me I've got be hungry to pass the ACT," Hyde said. "I've just got to want it bad enough and in the meantime just work hard and keep practicing."

Hyde's high school coach at Naples, Bill Kramer, said he hasn't spoken to Hyde about the situation and declined to comment.

During his senior season at Naples, Hyde rushed for 1,653 yards and 16 touchdowns, helping the Golden Eagles advance to the Class 3A regional final.
